BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
9th – 11th September 2020
Hello everyone and a special hello to our friends, friends that really know us and have shown us the much needed support through this extremely tough mentally and physically time. We are going into our 8th month of no income and I’m sure you would be able to work out how hard that would be. It is only through your help that we are keeping everything together keeping the lights on and food on the table.
On the 9th I was starting to fade back into that dark place called depression and almost didn’t make the trip down to Padang Padang to catch this swell. With the very real chance of catching my fav surfer and 11 time World Champ Kelly Slater in action. Lucky I snapped out of it and made the run down to the bukit, it ended up being some pretty good therapy as it turned out, and yes Kelly was out there surfing with just a handful of local stand outs. In fact there were only 14 surfers, and 9 water photographers in the water for the morning low tide.
Just a quick Nb. The Padang Padang car park with security and free public toilet block costs Rp2,000. (AU$0.20)to park. The entrance to the beach also has a security guard taking temperatures and giving hand sanitizer, checking everyone is wearing a mask. While at Uluwatu the parking fee is Rp10,000 (AU$1.00), no free public toilet, no security guards taking temperatures, no hand sanitizer or mask checks.
There was still the odd 6 footer down at Padang Padang but mostly more like double head high. It had dropped off quite a bit from the previous afternoon. Talking to a friend on location who was shooting the day before said there was also more like 60-70 surfers in the water. All wanting to share some waves with our man Kelly I guess. I was travelling light just with as small handy cam and tripod / backpack, and I’m glad I was. The track down to my once secret little platform halfway down the cliff was a little harder to find. There was a lot of over growth and fallen tree’s, so I was lucky I wasn’t dragging my heavy camera gear as well. The private land that extends to the cliff’s above Padang Padang must have been sold off as it is now all fenced off. Another 5 star hotel probably on the drawing board.
But anyway I did manage to shoot a stack of video and have put together a short 7.18min clip for you to check out. Sorry about the music but it’s royalty free and the best I could do without spend too much time sorting through crap. Just turn down the clip vol and pump your favorite tune maybe.

Weather wise it was mostly sunny with some cloud and the wind was more East the South East through the morning on an incoming tide.
Today the 11th and it is the start of Bali’s Galungan ceremony. Today is Hari Raya Sugian Bali and we will have the main ceremony of Galungan coming up on the 16th of September and culminating on the 26th with Hari Raya Kuningan. It’s a big event for us Hindu here in Bali and very unfortunate and hard with most families short of money from this virus and unable to make the bigger offerings of fruit and flowers this year. But it’s always the thought that counts right.
Surf wise I haven’t made it down the beach as yet spending most of the morning making a 7 min video clip.. But I do believe wave height would have dropped off a little more today and should drop even more tomorrow morning before we feel a new swell hitting the reefs later tomorrow afternoon. Stay tuned and we will keep you in the loop ok.
I’ve also been sent through a new Mentawai Islands state of the nation from our friends up at the Hidden Bay Surf Resort. I haven’t gone right through it yet but just a quick squiz at the photos and it looks like Bali is not the only part of Indonesia that has been cranking. Stay tuned and I’ll get that on line asap
Nb. anyone out there in Indonesia that wants to send us through a report and some photos (self promotion is ok) please do so and we’ll give you some free promo.
On the Bali Corona Virus situation things are not getting any better here in Bali ! The daily number of positive cases has been well over 100 everyday and more and more deaths being recorded. Bali’s borders are still open to domestic tourism and I don’t think it has been doing Balinese any favors. Jakarta is going back into Lock down next week and I really don’t think it will be much longer before Bali could be following suit. There are already calls for a Bali lock down tr try and quell and ease the spread oif the Corona virus. It’s pretty obvious the current strategy is not working real good.
Ok friends that you again for all your support and positive emails and text messages I’ve been getting from all over the World. Without your support I don’t know where we would be. I Thank You All !!!!
